Radial Disk Heating by More than One Spiral Density Wave

چکیده

We consider a differentially rotating, 2D stellar disk perturbed by two steady state spiral density waves moving at different patterns speeds. Our investigation is based on direct numerical integration of initially circular test-particle orbits. We examine a range of spiral strengths and spiral speeds and show that stars in this time dependent gravitational field can be heated (their random motions increased). This is particularly noticeable in the simultaneous propagation of a 2-armed spiral density wave near the corotation resonance (CR), and a weak 4-armed one near the inner and outer 4:1 Lindblad resonances. In simulations with 2 spiral waves moving at different pattern speeds we find: (1) the variance of the radial velocity, σR , exceeds the sum of the variances measured from simulations with each individual pattern; (2) σ R can grow with time throughout the entire simulation; (3) σ 2 R is increased over a wider range of radii compared to that seen with one spiral pattern; (4) particles diffuse radially in real space whereas they don’t when only one spiral density wave is present. Near the CR with the stronger, 2-armed pattern, test particles are observed to migrate radially. These effects take place at or near resonances of both spirals so we interpret them as the result of stochastic motions. This provides a possible new mechanism for increasing the stellar velocity dispersion in galactic disks. If multiple spiral patterns are present in the Galaxy we predict that there should be large variations in the stellar velocity dispersion as a function of radius. Subject headings: stellar dynamics

Disk Heating and Stellar Migration in Galaxies

We show that a typical star is unlikely to migrate from its galacto-centric radius of birth by more than about 5% over its lifetime. Radial migration, or a secular change in a star’s angular momentum, is caused by stochastic scattering by spiral waves and by dense gas complexes. The expected change in angular momentum is related to the radial action acquired by the star from these processes and...

The Amount of Dark Matter in Spiral Galaxies

The ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis of galactic disks imbedded in dark matter halos is examined. First, decompositions of the rotation curves of NGC2613, 3198, 6503, and 7184 are analyzed. For these galaxies the radial velocity dispersions of the stars have been measured. If the parameters of the decompositions are chosen according to the ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis, the Toomre Q stability parameter is...

Secular Evolution of the Galactic Disk

In the solar-neighbourhood, older stars have larger random velocities than younger ones. It is argued that the increase in velocity dispersion with time is predominantly a gradual process rather than one induced by discrete events such as minor mergers. Ephemeral spiral arms seem to be the fundamental drivers of disk heating, although scattering by giant molecular clouds plays an important mode...

Magnetic fields in the absence of spiral density waves – NGC 4414

We present three-frequency VLA observations of the flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 4414 made in order to study the magnetic field structure in absence of strong density wave flows. NGC 4414 shows a regular spiral pattern of observed polarization B-vectors with a radial component comparable in strength to the azimuthal one. The average pitch angle of the magnetic field is about 20 • , similar to ga...

Heating of Galactic Disks by Infalling Satellites

We develop an analytic model to calculate the rate at which galaxy disks are heated by dark matter substructures orbiting in their halos. We calibrate this model against new N-body simulations and demonstrate that it is able to reproduce the N-body heating rates to within a factor of 2 in the majority of cases. Applying these calculations within a model for the growth of disk galaxies in a Λ-do...
